St Margaret's School For Girls

Each summer there are improvements made around the school. This year is no exception. The garden area in the corner of the playground, which was the nursery garden, is to have a ‘face-lift’. This will include two areas of decorative mosaic. One area will be designed and made by the 5 junior in their Art & Design lessons, and the other area is where we would like to involve the senior girls. We are running a competition to design a new circular mosaic for an area in the garden.

Because mosaics are made up of small stones and tiles, designs should show clearly defined shapes, contained within a circle. It is important that the design can be viewed from all angles; that there is no right or wrong way to look at it.You may take your inspiration from any source you so choose. For example, the St Margaret’s logo or symbols that represent the school. You might consider nature and include leaves, trees, insects and birds, or maybe features of Aberdeen city, old Aberdeen, and the harbour and beach.

You should use colour in your design. Consider using colours that will fit in with the surrounding area. You may use any medium eg paint, coloured pencils, pastels, crayons or paper collage in which to produce your design.

Entries can be submitted by individuals or by small groups. The winning design may have to be altered slightly to suit the medium of mosaic so be prepared to be flexible. The entries will be judged by Miss Cowie, Mrs Richardson, Mrs Everest, Mr Brown and Mrs Lindsay, and there will be a prize for the winner and the runner up.

This is a very worthwhile competition where your design will leave a lasting legacy and will be something to be proud of and to have in your school profile. So have a go! All entries will be carefully considered and you will have a hand in actually making the mosaic.

Another improvement that will happen during the summer involves IIS girls. The girls are going to be involved in designing symbols for new door signs all around the school. These will also form a lasting contribution, by helping to make our school a nicer place and one where everyone can easily find their way around.

As part of her Advanced Higher Design work Faye Heslop’s designs are to be used in the construction of wooden seating from sections of the trees that were cut down last summer. When finished, these will also form part of the garden improvement.
