Ferries to Orkney and Shetland
Car ferries to Orkney and Shetland from Aberdeen and from Scrabster near Thurso are currently run by NorthLink Ferries. Pentland Ferries run a car ferry from Gills Bay, near John o’Groats, to St. Margarets Hope, Orkney, while John o’Groats Ferries run a summer-only passenger ferry from John o’Groats to Burwick in Orkney. The various Orkney islands are linked to each other by services run by Orkney Ferries.

Pentland Ferries Ltd
Pentland Ferries offers an attractive alternative route to Orkney; a short crossing time – just one hour between Caithness and St. Margarets Hope, Orkney – for passengers and their vehicles.There are three sailings from each location during winter. During summer there are four.

Pentland Ferries Ltd offer the shortest crossing time to Orkney for cars and passengers. The route is the most sheltered between Gill’s Bay in Caithness and St Margaret’s Hope, South Ronaldsay in Orkney providing a more appealing option to travellers who are unsure of travelling on the sea.

Throughout the crossing there is the opportunity to see a wide selection of local wildlife including seals, porpoises, killer whales, puffins and other sea birds. As you pass the uninhabited islands of Swona and Stroma watch out for the feral cattle on Swona, now recognised as a separate breed after being left alone on the island since 1974. Northlink Ferries
With NorthLink you can choose from up to three sailings each day from Scrabster (near Thurso) to Stromness in Orkney and nightly sailings from Aberdeen to Lerwick in Shetland – with four of these sailings going via Orkney’s capital, Kirkwall. Northlink Ferries run a regular car passenger ferry service from Scrabster (about a mile west of Thurso) in Caithness to Stromness in West Orkney. Three sailings run from Scrabster daily on the MV Hamnavoe, a large 20 passenger cabin ship with restaurants, creche and lounges on board. They pride themselves on the quality of the food and a cream tea features in the day trip ticket. The ferry docks at Stromness harbour where the ferry terminal also houses the excellent Orkney Tourist Information Office. Buses meet the ferry for onward travel across the island to Kirkwall. Lerwick Ferry Port
