Eric Liddell’s Daughter Opens New Eric Liddell Center Facilities
Patricia Liddell Russell, the eldest daughter of British Olympic legend Eric Liddell, opened the new facilities at the Eric Liddell Center in June. She visited Edinburgh in the lead up to the London Olympics to open up new ground floor improvements to the Eric Liddell Center at Holy Corner, named in memory of her father, who won 400m gold and 200m bronze medals at the 1924 Paris Olympics, and who’s inspirational story was featured in the film Oscar Award winning film “Chariots of Fire”.
The new facilities are part of a £248,000 Capital Appeal to transform access and facilities on the ground floor of the Center. Patricia opened a brand new access ramp into the Center along with the Center’s new reception, cafe and revamped kitchen. Funding for the new facilities has so far come from the PCG and Castanza Trusts, the Bank of Scotland Foundation and Eric Liddell Center members.
Also in attendance on the day was be the Rt. Hon. Donald Wilson, Edinburgh’s new Lord Provost along with Ian Murray MP and Jim Eadie MSP. Patricia Liddell said, “I’m delighted to be coming back to the Center today to open these important new facilities. Not only will the new ramp allow easier access into the Center, but the internal facilities will allow the charity to create new income streams to help support their important services for people in need in Edinburgh. Dad had a strong belief in service to his local community and was always doing things for other people. So it’s great to see that the Eric Liddell Center is going from strength to strength as a living memorial to Dad’s life and work.”
Bob Rendall the charity’s CEO was delighted to be welcoming back Patricia to the Eric Liddell Center. He said, “The Center has a close relationship with Eric Liddell’s daughters who are always keen to see the Center flourish. It’ll be great to see these exciting new facilities for the community open at long last.”
