Local Graduates and Businesses Benefit From intern Programme…
An innovative programme to help university graduates into the workplace has received a major boost to funding with a grant from the European Union. Match-funded by Scottish government, the grant is aimed solely at the Highlands and islands.
The Adopt an intern programme has been part-funded by the Scottish government since its inception two years ago by the Centre for Scottish Public Policy (CSPP). The programme has expanded rapidly and placed over 170 graduates into paid internships across Scotland.
Joy Lewis, programme manager for adopt an intern explains: “Although we’ve already successfully placed 13 graduates throughout the Highlands and islands, we realised that without more concentrated effort we couldn’t help those businesses in remote areas or reach local or returning graduates. This EU funding will help us to target 20 businesses/organisations who would benefit greatly from a talented graduate with the requisite skills, knowledge and interest in this unique area. We’ll be offering fully-funded internships from between three to six months, depending on the needs of the organisation and their capacity to support and develop the graduate.
The Highlands and islands enterprise Zone (HISEZ) recently won a contract to act as programme coordinator for us on this project and we welcome its local knowledge.
“In addition to these 20 EU-funded internships, we will continue to offer support to organisations keen to consider a graduate internship as part of their business development programme.”
The programme has a very high success rate with 61 per cent of graduates moving into full-time employment as a direct result of their internship experience (half remaining with the same organisation). Many of the participating organisations return to the programme to offer further paid internships.
All types of businesses in the Highlands and islands can benefit from the Adopt an intern programme and support Scotland’s graduates in finding much-needed, paid work experience.
