The Burrell Collection

Renowned Impressionist works are to be seen together for the very first time at The Burrell Collection in Glasgow.

Burrell’s Masters of Impressionism exhibition, which begins in July and runs for six months, will have something to offer all visitors – from tourists to school groups and specialist audiences.

“This will bring together some of Sir William Burrell’s most renowned Impressionist works, many of which have not been displayed together before, points out Vivien Hamilton, Research Manager for Glasgow Museums. “These paintings and pastels have long been recognised as being internationally significant.

The exhibition will feature approximately 40 Impressionist works on oil and paper from William Burrell’s magnificent collection of 19th century French paintings. Other famous artists from the Impressionist period will feature, including Boudin, Degas, Manet, Cezanne, Pissarro, Renoir, Sisley and Gauguin.

The aim is to showcase the variety of techniques these innovative artists used, highlighting Burrell’s taste in collecting in the first two decades of the 20th century.

The exhibition will also celebrate the wonderful range of colours newly available to artists working in pastel in the later 19th century.

The selected works will be displayed in the temporary exhibition space at The Burrell Collection, where visitors will be able to compare the techniques and subject matter of works of art from artists of the same period and of similar ‘schools’.

This exhibition will also allow famous works of art which are currently not on display to the public to be seen.

It will also provide an opportunity for the works to be conserved, and in some cases for damaged frames to be repaired.

Glasgow Museums is seeking donations for this exhibition and all funds raised will help support the conservation and displays of the paintings, in addition to the associated education programme. Everyone making a donation will have their name featured on the Thank You panels within the exhibition space and will also be recognised on the Glasgow Museums’ website.

For donations above £150, donors will receive the benefits as listed above with the addition of the donation being recognized against an individual painting and acknowledgement in the Glasgow Life Annual Review. They will also receive an invitation to the Masters of Impressionism Preview Event.
