For almost 20 years Cantraybridge College near Croy has been providing specialist training and support for young adults with learning disabilities.

The former farm offers a diverse range of courses including agriculture, horticulture and woodwork, as well as experience with small animals and birds.

The students also learn valuable life and employability skills so they can live independently as active members of the community.

The college developed a very integrated, holistic approach to providing support services, which involves training and preparation for the workplace with a real understanding of the needs of people with disabilities.

Cantraybridge College has 36 students who are aged between 16 and 30 and study either part-time or full-time. There is also accommodation available with housing support for students who choose to be residents rather than day visitors.

As a registered charity, Cantraybridge College relies on donations from the public as well as funds from a number of organisations and local authorities.

Staff and students at the college regularly engage in fundraising activities and operate as a social enterprise to showcase the skills and talents of the students.

This includes selling plants from the horticultural department or crafts made by the woodwork team, such as Adirondack chairs, chopping boards and wine racks.

Staff and students are working together on a new venture that will help raise awareness of Cantraybridge College and further enhance the learning experience.

The first phase of a three-stage development plan is under way to upgrade the facilities and create a shop and cafe to attract members of the public.

This will not only give tourists and visitors a chance to see at first hand what the college is all about, but it will help the students develop new skills.

Phase one of the capital development project is part-funded by LEADER Highland and the Robertson Trust and includes a new workshop and a meeting room as well as the catering and retail space.
