Challenge Service Responsibility Internationalism
Gordonstoun prepares all of its students to go out into the world and make a real difference by offering them unique opportunities which will stretch and challenge them mentally, physically and emotionally.
Full boarding for boys and girls aged 8-18
Situated in a magnificent 150 acre estate in the heart of the north east of Scotland, nestled between the sandy beaches of the Moray coast and the more rugged terrain of the Scottish hills, Gordonstoun offers a unique brand of independent education. The school believes that young people should be treated as individuals and should be encouraged to learn through experience to maximise their fulfilment and potential. All students are provided with a unique programme which embraces the four pillars of: Challenge, Responsibility, Service and Internationalism.
Gordonstoun is a fully co-educational boarding school with over 600 pupils from ages 8 to18. Junior pupils enter the Junior School, Aberlour House, from age 8 and can make a smooth transfer to the senior school at age 13. Approximately one third of the school’s students come from overseas, representing 40 nationalities, and this helps create an important mix of language and culture.
Students are regarded as equals, regardless of background, and from the outset, they learn to work together and support each other in the challenges and tests they face in all aspects of the curriculum. They are all members of a community which places great emphasis on the importance of integrity and honesty and are encouraged to develop confidence in their own abilities, whilst respecting the abilities and achievements of others. This is accomplished by combining a strong academic curriculum, a full programme of sporting and artistic activities and excellent facilities with a highly committed and expert staff.
The school’s outdoor education programme offers unparalleled opportunities. Expeditions and seamanship play an important part in the curriculum. Participation in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is also strongly encouraged. All Gordonstoun pupils take part in expeditions in the Scottish Highlands and sail open boats in the Moray Firth and on the school sail training vessel, Ocean Spirit of Moray, off the west coast of Scotland. The unique Gordonstoun education programme presents students with significant life-shaping opportunities which result also in memorable and fulfilling experiences. The school believe its students come home with more than just good exam results and leave ready to make a real difference in the world.
“I chose Gordonstoun for my child not just for its academic achievements but because I felt the staff truly embrace the school’s philosophy with a passion, and the students really experience a rounded, challenging curriculum which will stay with them for life.”
