North Shore Pottery By Patricia Niemann and North Lands Creative Glass

North Shore Pottery lies in between the historic villages of Dunbeath and Lybster, where the rugged cliffs of south east Caithness sweep northward. The restored Oat-Meal Mill makes the perfect setting for Studio workshop and showroom of potter Jenny Mackenzie Ross. Patricia Niemann is a goldsmith, glass artist and designer, based in Caithness (in the Far North of Scotland). Born 1968 in Vilshofen ( Germany ), she is a born and bred Bavarian lassie.

Patty (as her friends call her) has a jewellery studio and showroom in the Mill of Forse, Latheron. (The Mill of Forse is also the home of the North Shore Pottery and Jenny Mackenzie Ross.)

She also works free-lance as glass kilnforming and blowing instructor for Northlands Creative Glass in Lybster.

In her studio, she makes one-off pieces of jewellery in 18ct gold, silver and platinum to customer commission and to own designs and she also sets gemstones.

Blown glass is an element in her more artistic jewellery – her artistic practice is based around the human body and the ideas of life and death, especially “vanitas” (= transitoryness), decay, attitude and – humour! Her most recent body of work is based on the local archeology and the deteriorating effects of the harsh weather in Caithness.

According to Jenny Mackenzie Ross; “In my pots I endeavour to reflect the landscape in which I live. The forms and ideas spring from where the land meets the sea. I love texture and form, and I love to see the evidence of the journey of the pot through the flames from soft mud to stone. Salt glazing enhances all these qualities. I often use kelp as a source of salt and fuel in the firing, thus imbuing the pots with the saltiness of the sea itself.
