The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra is one of the great success stories of British music and is regarded as one of the UK’s finest orchestras. The acclaim it has enjoyed in recent years is founded on brilliance, versatility and bold programming. This is an orchestra that thinks nothing of performing a complex, contemporary “sinfonietta” – sized piece for a specialist ensemble of solo players alongside a major symphonic work.
Formed in December 1935, it has won major awards including the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society prize (the only Scottish Orchestra to do so) and two Gramophone Awards. Its concerts at home and abroad with IIan Volkov, Chief Conductor since 2003 have left critics and audiences reaching for superlatives. It has a busy broadcasting schedule on BBC Radio 3, Radio Scotland and BBC Television, and records for the respected British label Hyperion.
In Scotland as well as being the leading supporter of living composers and new music, it is increasingly active in the community, with an innovative learning programme dedicated to bringing the inspiration of great music to people of all ages and backgrounds.
