The box is open for business

The Highlands and Islands have always been seen as an inspiration for the backdrops of many productions that have graced the silver and small screen. But when the filming is all wrapped up there is still little evidence left to suggest that camera crews, actors or directors have ever set foot in the north of Scotland.

Now a new player. Big Box Network, is looking to stimulate a film industry that Caithness and the north Highlands can call its own and leave a legacy for the creative arts in the region.

Last year Big Box showcased its first ever short movie, A Time to be Sleeping, and for the four partners of the company it was the start of what they hope will be a long line of films that make an impact.

“The primary purpose of the first film was to get going and we believe the far north is a great place for it to happen,” said Charlie Wilson, who has worked with TV and theatre companies in Europe and North America, “We don’t just want to focus on making our own films, we want to try and develop the local industry,”

Other partners include Norrie Maclaren, who invented Video Diaries for Channel A after working with no less a film legend than Stanley Kubrick, and Bryan Fraser, who has exceptional experience in distribution and social networking. The fourth, Alistair Murray, mixes commercial skills with creativity, being a successful businessman, published author and radio presenter. To ensure a sound footing for the next stage of development Big Box is now restructuring for investment. This includes applying for Government Enterprise Investment Status to enable tax relief for any investors, and obtaining the rights for a slate of feature films.

A tantalising call to action indeed, for both private and regional film futures, and if you are interested in contacting Big Box their details are on: www.bigboxnetwork.com .
