Plockton Small Boat Sailing Club and Plockton Annual Regatta
Plockton also has a Sailing Club with races throughout the Summer months. The Plockton Small Boat Sailing Club (PSBSC), formed in 1933, hosts races throughout the year that culminate in Regatta fortnight in July/August, one of the highlights of the west coast sailing calendar. Regattas always begin on the Monday after the fourth Sunday in July to accommodate the Free Presbyterian Communion.
A highlight of the calendar is the Plockton Annual Regatta which is an exciting summer fortnight for locals and visitors alike, all eager to participate in the daily programme of local boat and centreboard races that are set on varied courses around 10 race markers located in Plockton Bay and out on Loch Carron. An entertaining concert and ceilidh at the end of the Regatta closes out a highly enjoyable fortnight for everyone involved. Regatta 2010 runs between Monday 26th July 2010 and Saturday 7th August 2010.
Although the rigs and boats are much changed, the current club has developed from a strong seagoing tradition: from the days when sail was the norm for fishing boats and they went out with drift nets and long lines to make a living. On the way home, for sport, the skippers would race each other, competing both for the biggest catch and the first boat home. Plockton Small Boat Sailing Club still carries on two important Highland traditions: skilled seamanship on the water and the ability to discuss tactics over many hours with the aid of an occasional dram.
Plockton local boats are at the heart of the organisation, but there are also races for toppers, yachts, centreboards and other watercraft. PSBSC also offers a programme of sail training in the summer, using the Club’s RYA registered instructors and is a RYA registered training centre. Plockton is extremely popular with tourists and its warm climate, a consequence of the Gulf Stream, means that Palm trees can be found by the shores of the loch.
In addition to racing the club owns 7 toppers which are used for youth and adult training throughout the summer. The club has RYA training centre status. Last year saw the club enter into an exciting project (Am Bata) with the Plockton High School which involves a ‘boat builder in residence’ teaching traditional boat building skills to senior pupils and night classes.
The three S6 pupils who spend two days a week learning traditional boat-building skills through the Am Bata project have been given a unique insight into sustainable forestry practice.
Pupils involved with the Am Bata boat building project recently worked with Forestry Commission Scotland ranger, Stuart Findlay, to make sure that future generations could in turn keep the boat building skills alive. Information about this project can be found at http://www.am-bata.org/
The Am Bata project is an exciting project which will further enhance the position of the ‘local boat’ in the club’s activities. Plockton Small Boat Sailing Club (PSBSC) Facilities:
- Small fleet of Toppers
- Trainers (sailing & safety boat)
