On the social side of village life there is a Choral Group, Rotary Club, dancing classes of many and varied styles, plusat the start of August the ever-entertaining Golspie Gala Week, now with more than 30 years’ continuous success. Among the 100 events staged throughout eight days are a car-banger derby, a fancy dress parade, a hilarious wheelbarrow race and a parade of massed pipe bands as a finale.
Golspie Heritage Society, which started in recent years with public exhibitions of local artefacts, photographs and documents during Gala Week, now has a permanent home in the former Fisherman’s Welcome on Station Road.There are plans to mount regular public displays there.
Golspie Gala week is held at the start of August, an event that has been running for over thirty years now and goes from strength to strength. Visitors are welcome to participate or simply stand back and enjoy.
Gala Week has for many years been the “homecoming week” for those who have had to earn a crust away from the village and it’s also time to renew friendships with returning visitors and to make new friends with those her for the first time. It is without doubt one of the most successful events in the summer entertainment calender in the north.
Among the 100 events staged throughout the week are a car-banger derby, golf competition, bowls competition, Ben Bhraggie hill race, fancy dress parade, Golspie Gala Queen competition, a wheelbarrow race and a parade of massed pipe bands as a finale. Golspie Heritage Society has a permanent home in the former Fisherman’s Welcome on Station Road. The IT-equipped public library, open for limited periods over four days weekly, is situated in the Community Centre complex adjoining the High School. The Biblical Garden in the grounds of Seaforth House provides a pleasant place to sit and simply enjoy the world going by.
Highlight of the calendar Golspie Gala Week is one of the highlights of the north’s calendar. From sporting events to dances, from the flower show to the raft races, there’s something for everyone, particularly children. Also enjoy the inventive fancy dress competition and the hilarious traditional “wheelbarrow race”; nearly 35 years as part of Golspie Gala Week’s grand finale, plus a total of seven pipe bands will be parading on the final Saturday at the Grand Finale.
Several Caithness cars compete in the grand finale, the All in Final, which is open to all cars still running, with the crowd being treated to an action packed end to the day.
