Group Meetings and Contact – Chest, Heart & Stroke Scotland (CHSS)

Submitted by Owen McCafferty on Tue, 2009-11-24

These weekly meetings provide a structured program of activities as varied as arts and crafts, bowling, puzzles, talks, etc.

The are also regular outings throughout the year for stroke patients and their families. We follow the traditional model here with a weekly group with a very communication based focus.

However a larger group also runs in conjunction with this allowing movement between the two for access to activity days thus embracing the services aims and objectives by providing offshoots with this loose /social structure.

  • Monday, 11.30 – 1.30pm Bowling at Thurso Viking Bowl and 1.30 – 3.30pm – the Thurso group meet in the Red Cross Rooms, Thurso.
  • Tuesday, 2.00 – 4.00pm the Thurso group meet in the Pentland View, Thurso
  • Wednesday, 2.00 – 4.00pm the Wick group meet in the Laurandy Day Centre at Wick Airport.

We need volunteers to help with all aspect of our work. If you have a few spare hours each week, why not join us as a volunteer driver, group helper or home visitor.

Chest, Heart & Stroke Scotland (CHSS) Volunteer Stroke Service Groups offer support to those who have had a stroke with particular focus on those with communication difficulties, and their carers and families. They are run by staff and aided by a team of volunteers.

2009 marked an important anniversary for CHSS as it is 110 years since we founded so this year’ s Awareness Week celebrated the birthday by inviting people to Step Out for Scotland and take more exercise – and have fun at the same time.

In some areas one to one support can be provided on a temporary basis. If you want more information on the services available in your area, click on the regional links on the left or contact Head Office on 0131 225 6963 or use our Information request form.

If you would like to talk to a Chest, Heart and Stroke Nurse, call the advice line:

Telephone: 0845 077 6000

Some of the questions that are regularly asked of the nurses are:

  • What is happening to me, I don’t understand?
  • How can I help myself?
  • Is this normal?
  • What happens next?

Don’t be hesitant in asking the nurses for help and advice, after all, that is what they are there for!
