This has just opened and provides much detailed information with photographs, models and interactive displays telling you about Dornoch, the area and it’s people. Historylinks Museum is dedicated to the history of Dornoch parish. Museum telling the story of Dornoch from pre history to present time. It is the only VisitScotland 5 Star Museum in the Highlands and one of seven museums in Scotland to have gained this prestigious award. The permanent exhibition shows the Cathedral, feuding clans, the shameful burning of Scotland’s last condemned witch and the treachery and violence of Picts and Vikings. Current displays show a golf professional’s workshop where Donald Ross honed his skills, an unusual insight into Andrew Carnegie at home in Skibo and historic objects and local tales to give a precious insight into the lives of ordinary, and not so ordinary Dornoch folk.
The museum has several models which may be of particular interest to children. There are also building blocks to construct a model of the cathedral and a puzzle based on the 18 holes of the Royal Dornoch Golf Club. For your entertainment Historylinks Museum has a choice of three films: ‘Proud Sutherland’ (Sutherland in the 1950’s), ‘Links through Dornoch’s History’ and ‘The Dornoch Light Railway’.
The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS) surveyed Camore Woods and alphabetically enumerated some 25 hut-circles, from A-Y, while the Dornoch Heritage Society having added to this number, and included all archaeological features within the area roughly bounded by the River Evelix, the Dornoch Firth and the town of Dornoch, have identified all the sites numerically.
