You can’t visit Plockton without experiencing the Seal watching trip! Apart from the fact that the trip is free if you don’t see any seals, it is excellent value for money when you do see them.
Calum is the owner of the boat and will keep you entertained throughout the trip with his “Sula Mhor” – he’s what is know as a “real character”! The Sula Mhor is fully licensed and insured for fifty passengers. There is full rain cover in the event of inclement weather. She carries a life raft and full safety equipment and has a qualified local skipper who grew up sailing these waters.
As the longest established boat trip operator in Skye & Lochalsh, he knows there are times when the seals will have simply disappeared. There could be many reasons — high tide, canoes chasing them off or they have just gone elsewhere; after all it is nature in the wild. When the tide is high enough, they sail round Heron Island (Eilean na Creag Duibhe), which is covered in Scots Pine and is a heronry.
Calum will also provide you with lots of information about the wild life that you will see and the local history, as he takes you round Loch Carron. Common Seals (also known as Harbour Seals) are abundant around the islands and rocks, just a short sail from Plockton. Grey Seals, Otters, Porpoise, Dolphins are becoming more regular visitors and for the last three years Bottlenose Dolphins have been seen alongside the Argus (my previous boat), jumping and bow riding and treating us to a display that had some of our passengers moved to tears. Also you can expect to see herons anywhere on the shore line. Some of the other sea birds we see are oyster catchers, curlew, shag, cormorant, shearwater, eider duck, guillemots, and, very occasionally, puffin.
