Engineer’s worldwide success is down to quality service

A Highland based marine engineering firm is entering its third year of trading and attributes success to the quality, bespoke service and focused attention that it offers.

Marine Projects Ltd is operated by Malcolm Stewart who has 17 years of experience in marine and mechanical engineering services. He took the plunge and set up his own business in 2009, following a successful career working for some of the sector’s leading companies.

He says the business offers plenty of adventure as well as satisfaction: “I base myself in Inverness where I have a lot of regular clients, but what I offer is very much in demand all over the world. I’m as likely to be asked to go to the Middle East as I am to the west coast of Scotland. We work to meet the needs of clients in the commercial, leisure, aquaculture and renewable marine industries.

“Our aim is to provide a tailored service to each of our customers responding to their technical support needs as and when required. We adopt a can-do approach, and use our expansive knowledge from the marine industry to provide specialist engineering services and solutions.

“In December, I was in Venice to provide emergency technical support to a vessel that had taken a steel rope around its propeller. Two teams of divers were called out and an underwater habitat was utilised, enabling the divers to carry out a dry inspection of the critical underwater equipment. All the information we gathered was fed back to the surface in real time so that decisions could be made instantly.

The ship was sailing within 60 hours of our arrival on-site.

The underwater world is a really exciting place to be and advances in technology mean that we are always capable of breaking previous boundaries. For example, not many people are aware that there is such a thing as an underwater habitat; basically this is a massive air balloon under the water where we can go to weld, repair and inspect equipment. It to weld, repair and inspect equipment. It to weld, repair and inspect equipment. Its attached to the vessel under repair so that we can work more efficiently. There is quite literally, a whole other unseen world beneath the water.

“By working to the same standards across the board, when it comes to working on leisure boats and light commercial vessels the quality of service is superior.

We offer a service of superior quality. We establish a mutually beneficial relationship with our clients so that Marine Projects can manage their boats; this takes away the stress and confusion that can exist when owning or operating a vessel. I do this by putting in place a service contract tailored to individual’s requirements, financial constraints and vessel operating conditions. This keeps the preventative maintenance high, the costs low, and maximises the re-sale value of the asset. It also means that any high costs for repairs can be more easily spread throughout the year.

“It’s a service that’s proved very popular and is hugely satisfying to me because I can build up a good rapport with clients. I have worked in the industry for a long time so we have a brilliant network of contacts to call on ensuring that work is always carried out effectively and efficiently. We have a solid network of marine equipment manufacturers and tradesmen. We always provide the best possible choice and service.”

Marine Projects Ltd is an approved services supplier to Wartsila UK (a globally leading commercial marine equipment manufacturer). The Highland based firm also engages in on-board projects equipment installation and removal inspection, overhaul and survey.

The firm’s flexible, can-do, approach means that it is routinely awarded business: “We can provide year long support for privately or commercially owned vessels. We offer in-season and operational technical support to cover breakdowns and general maintenance. During down time you can rely on our engineering services for decommissioning, servicing and refit. We are always ready.”
