For Thurso-based entrepreneur Lisa Poulsen, the name of her business says it all – Inspired By Caithness.
The Napier University design graduate has opened the business of her dreams in her hometown where her work, which ranges from wall art to corporate logos, is constantly inspired by Caithness stunning landscapes and unique dialect but with a contemporary twist.
Inspired By Caithness was only established in May but Lisa (27) has already been recognised for her business acumen with a runners up finish in Caithness Chamber of Commerce’s George Bruce Young Entrepreneur of the Year awards.
After graduating and spending a year travelling around the world, Lisa came back to Caithness designing kitchen interiors. But while on maternity leave she decided she wanted to set up her own business.
“I had spent years in Edinburgh and a year travelling yet it wasn’t until I came back home that I realised how important Caithness was to me- it was really unexpected and I didn’t want to leave again.
I got to thinking about the big picture and I was keen to do what I was trained to do.”
Starting out small, Lisa designed bespoke Christmas cards which she sold through local outlets. She quickly realised there was potential in the area to offer a greater range of design and print services.
Today, Inspired By Caithness offers a wide range of products including stunning wall art on acrylic and canvas, bespoke greeting cards, graphic design services including wedding stationery, tattoo design as well as branding, corporate identity and promotional material. Working from her home studio in Thurso Lisa also uses local suppliers as much as possible.
Currently, she is busy designing a new range of Christmas cards in time for the festive season and creating unique “pop art” portraits from family photographs for the home.
She is also looking to the future and plans to further develop her website to provide an enhanced online shopping service.
