Human resources (HR) is an essential consideration for every employer – regardless of how big or small their workforce. Yet each business rarely gets the opportunity to have an approach that is individual to its needs.

Mr McAndrew established COL HR after working in the industry – in the UK and abroad – for more than 15 years.

In fact, he has worked for many international companies, such as Morgan Stanley, BP, GE Energy and Honeywell, during which time he spent two-and-a-half years employed in the Middle East on the world’s biggest oil and gas project.

“I keep up to date with international labour laws, as well as government legislation for various countries, and I can tap into these resources when needed. This is an added value for any company that may have an international and/or multidiscipline aspect to its work.”

But as Mr McAndrew explains, COL HR is not just a consultancy firm for large and international companies – the service has plenty to offer small businesses too.

“Ultimately in every business, big or small, people are the greatest asset, but any strategic decisions a company makes will have a direct impact on its employees,” he commented. “HR involvement in priority initiatives can ensure that employees are engaged and motivated towards achieving the company’s goals.

“My services can be of benefit to smaller firms that do not have their own HR department. For example, if they are hiring – even for one position – I can ensure they know how to draft a job description, conduct interviews properly and that they are aware of the appropriate legislation. Simple education on these practices can ensure small companies are not caught out when they are recruiting for the first time.

Mr McAndrew is particularly keen to ensure businesses in the north of Scotland are aware that COL HR has the ability to provide the full range of human resource services.

“There is no flat fee for my services. Every business will have different HR requirements, it could be a large recruitment project, a large-scale change initiative, a minor employee relations issue or being available to answer ad hoc queries. I will agree a fee structure with the client that will suit their needs and ensure they quickly see a return on investment.”

Regardless of a company’s geographic location, COL HR provides a personal service to each and every client.

Mr McAndrew added: “Each week I travel to visit clients in various locations. I feel that it is essential for me to meet with them face to face so that I can fully understand what their requirements are.
