At the Italian Caffe in Glasgow’s Merchant City, the intention is to create a comfortable environment where people can drop by for exquisite Italian dishes, fine wine, great coffee, and a convivial atmosphere, without the stiff surroundings usually associated with such specialised produce and delicate flavours.
It’s the first enoteca restaurant in Scotland a firmly Italian style of dining, with a broad menu of ‘little plates’ of mouthwatering delights, which combine to create a taste sensation. Run by the same people who brought the Italian Kitchen to Glasgow, the Caffe lives by the same high standards-from authentic Italy-sourced cured meats and cheeses, to market fresh produce bought daily in the local area.
Inside, there’s an upmarket yet informal ambience, with a focus on quality fixtures and fittings that matches the emphasis on high-quality produce. The comfortable, low-lit surroundings encourage a slower pace of dining, which in turn puts the accent on enjoying the taste of each mouthful, rather than simply filling up on food.
There are more than 50 wines on the menu, 28 of which are available by the glass – which means you can sample some of the more exclusive or unusual vintages without having to commit to a whole bottle.
Every dish is made from scratch, and while the ingredients are not cheap or generic, the individual plates are reasonably priced – and the Gaffe’s pre-theatre and lunch menus offer great value for money.
