The Cairngorm Reindeer Herd centre

This is Britain’s only Reindeer her and the reindeer are allowed to roam freely in their natural environment. The centre is open daily from 10am to 5pm all year, apart from Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Visit the centre and watch Britain’s only reindeer herd roaming freely against the stunning background of Glenmore, found free ranging in the Cairngorm mountains in Scotland. Reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) are semi-domesticated caribou. Although similar, there are fundamental differences between reindeer and their wild cousins, caribou. Reindeer are shorter and stouter. There are currently around 150 reindeer, approximately 50 of them ranging the Cairngorm Mountains and the remainder on the Glenlivet Estate; the locations being some 30 miles apart.

The reindeer were re-introduced into Scotland in 1952 by a Swedish Reindeer Herder. The herd is free ranging and has grown in numbers over the years. Reindeer bulls are smaller than caribou bulls, but cows may weigh the same as caribou cows. These extremely tame and friendly animals are a joy to all who come and see them, approximately 50 of them ranging the Cairngorm. On the slopes of Cairngorm, the funicular railway allows visitors a view of the high, wild habitat of the plateau.

You can visit the herd all year at 11am or from May to September you can also go at 2:30pm. Be sure to wear suitable outdoor clothing and stout footwear or wellington boots. Wellington boots can be hired from the centre. Learn the history of the Cairngorm reindeer herd and meet the reindeer themselves. Perhaps you would like to adopt one? There are Christmas events with the reindeer too.

The Cairngorm Reindeer Herd centre Wild Farm cottage and Reindeer cottage Walk takes you on a tour of our unusual Highland Farm near Tomintoul, where the herd of Reindeer who are part of the now famous Cairngorm herd spend their summer months. Also on the farm, herds of beautiful Fallow & Red deer graze, a flock of tiny Soay sheep roam and Wild Boar root for their food. Also try the beautiful sandy beach of Loch Morlich.
