The Royal Dornoch Golf Club is situated 45 miles north of the City of Inverness and is one of the most popular golf courses in Scotland. It is normally ranked amongst the world’s top twenty golf courses!

The course was originally laid out by old Tom Morris in 1891. Over the next 50 or so years the course was modified by John Sutherland who was the club Secretary at that time.

George Duncan added five new holes (numbers 7 to 11) after World War II.

The course is now 6,500 yards, classic links with the first eight holes following the natural contours of the dunes, while the rest flank the beaches of Dornoch Bay. Raised or sloping greens are characteristic as well as elevated tees so the target is well presented although rarely easy to reach.

In 1895, Donald Ross, the doyen of American golf architects, returned to Dornoch his birthplace, from St. Andrews, as professional and “keeper of the green” before heading off to America to make a name for himself there.

You can find a very good leaflet about Donald Ross in the local Tourist Information Centre.

The two courses of the town are the “Championship Course” and the “Struie”.

Famous golfers from all over the world have been seen on the Royal Dornoch Courses, such as: Tom Watson, Greig Norman and Ben Crenshaw.

A Royal title means exceptional standards and we always aim to exceed the expectations of our frequent visitors and loyal members. However, we aim to do this in a relaxed, informal environment, with an emphasis on traditional highland hospitality. Over the years the Championship course has been tweaked and enhanced by greats such as John Sutherland and our own ex-professional and greenkeeper, Donald Ross. Open Champion, George Duncan added new holes after the war ensuring that the course has remained a challenge in the face of ever improving equipment and continues to be regularly ranked within the top 15 best courses in the world.
