Strath Halladale River, Sutherland

Salmon Fishing River Halladale Scotland – North West Sutherland represents one of the last great scenic secrets of Europe.

Salmon fishing on the River Halladale has enjoyed a remarkable resurgence during recent years. The 5 year average has more than doubled to over 600 fish and in the 2007 season, a total of 909 salmon and grilse were landed.

The Halladale River is not so impressive as the Naver along its length but it makes a most majestic entry to the sea sweeping round the sand dunes and a small promontory where the Bighouse stands. You can walk down to the footbridge then along the river bank to the shore. The rocks on the way show evidence of ancient boilings and bubblings. This is a more exposed beach than the others, very good for surfing, good for playing on gentler days, but very pleasant for walking along. A return through the dunes above to the car park makes a very pleasant short, circular walk. The area round the car park is good for wild flowers and butterflies. Seals are often seen off this shore.

The fishable river is about 15 miles in length and flows through beautiful wilderness scenery into the Pentland Firth . It comprises 6 beats and over 50 named pools.

The River Halladale has four rotating beats, and you can fish up to three rods on your beat. It is very much a spate river and if you hit it right you can enjoy great sport. Little walking is required as the Strath road parallels the river.

  • Around 300-400 fish are caught each season.
  • John’s Specials are the best flies on the river. He ties them up in our Crofters’ Bar

The Halladale is a very interesting river to fish and repays mastering a number of different techniques to get the best out of it as well as increasing fishing enjoyment.

This will also be increased by the knowledge of a local ghillie with experience both of the pools and the appropriate methods at varying water heights and temperatures. The Administration Secretary has the names and telephone number of several recommended ghillies who are excellent value. Fishing clients should make their own arrangements directly with the ghillies concerned.

You can only fish this river with a permit as otherwise you are poaching!

To book a beat on the river telephone Audrey Imlach at the Strath Halladale Partnership, on 01641 571271.
