At TIMESPAN scenes from our past are re-created featuring life-size sets and sound effects as well as a superb audio-visual programme. Especially for children is our dressing up area where they can try on period costumes from our past.

Timespan is situated in the centre of Helmsdale, Sutherland – the largest, but least populated, area of the Highlands. It comprises an award winning museum, art gallery, Story Telling Room, riverside café, shop and riverside garden of Scottish herbs and flowers.

Timespan is delighted to be the first UK destination to bring a GPS visitor experience to the great outdoors – and what a great experience it is! The Sutherland Explorer will guide you through the fascinating history of the Kildonan Gold Rush which took place nearly 150 years ago. Also ELEPHANT TEST, an exciting exhibition of new performance and video work by Timespan’s artist in residence, Ruth Macdougall.

This Timespan Heritage and Arts Centre in Helmsdale has won a number of awards and portrays life in the area over past centuries, has a sizeable local archive and also a contemporary art gallery. Dunrobin Castle, seat of the Earls of Sutherland, lies 10 miles south on the edge of Golspie. The Castle of Mey, highland home of the late Queen Mother is well worth a visit and is about an hours drive away.

Timespan museum provides insight to the colourful history of Helmsdale, Sutherland and the surrounding area. The multi-faceted collection illustrates many aspects of past ways of life with re-creations of a croft, byre, smithy, and shop. Other displays present the areas’ archaeology, geology and natural history. Look at events before you visit

Timespan is for children too
Would you like to be a VIKING? They wore brightly coloured clothes. Put on the trousers, under-shirt, tunic, cloak and helmet.

how about a WICKED SHERIFF? Dressed like he was in 1722 when he sentenced Janet Horne to be burnt.

or the COUNTESS OF SUTHERLAND? Wearing the pretty frock and cape. Put on a tiara to complete the outfit!

what about a SCHOOLGIRL? Dress for school as they did in 1902. Put on a dress and pinny.

or a CLEARANCE WOMAN? She wore a long skirt, blouse and a plaid shawl. Don’t forget the bonnet!

There is lot’s to see at Timespan to fire your imagination! Displays begin with the Stone Age and travel to the present via such themes as the Picts, the Highland Clearances, and even the 1869 gold rush in the nearby Strath of Kildonan. Tableaux, artefacts, and audiovisual effects all contribute to this interpretation of Scottish life.

TIMESPAN Museum and Arts Centre in Helmsdale has been given a funding boost of over £13,000 to bring the building into the 21st century with an eco-friendly makeover. Read more
