Planning and designing your future
A leading Highland based architectural and planning firm has welcomed a new senior architect to the team ensuring that it continues to offer a first class service to clients.
G H Johnston Building Consultants Ltd was established 34 years ago by Gary Johnston. It has a vast portfolio throughout Scotland with a number of high profile clients including Macdonald Hotels, Tiso and Tulloch Homes. Ongoing projects include business in the leisure, retail, hospitality and office sector. The firm is also taking the lead on the new District Centre at Milton of Leys, having been previously involved in designing the business parks at Cradlehall and Stoneyfield in Inverness.
Gary said: “It’s hugely satisfying to be in a position to offer an integrated service and assist clients through what they may view as an intimidating planning and design process. We ensure that there is full communication and have a broad depth of knowledge. Ideas can be taken right through from concept to completion.
“We can advise on policy planning, master planning, land use and development potential. We can also assist in lodging planning applications and appear on behalf of clients at hearings and public inquiries.
Our clients tend to be development companies and agencies, individual developers (including estates, farmers and private companies) and professional businesses such as solicitors.
We regularly have in excess of 150 live projects with many more in the pipeline. It’s satisfying to see that at least 50 per cent of our customers are repeat business which testifies to the quality bespoke service that we offer. We work closely with other local agencies and various consultants including engineers, archaeologists and ecologists.
“We spend much of our time finding solutions to issues that our clients, or planning legislation, present and we ensure that what we come up with is efficient and economic to our client.”
The firm recently welcomed Shane Rodgers to its team as a senior architect. Shane ran his own architectural consultancy in Thurso before relocating to Inverness and Nairn several years ago. He is secretary to the Inverness Architectural Association.
Shane’s enthusiasm for architecture is infectious: “I’d like to see it in the school curriculum! As a teenager I knew that this would be my dream job. I love buildings and I love playing a part in realising people’s dreams and visions. To be able to see something materialise that was once just a thought or a rough sketch on a piece of paper is very rewarding.
“It’s so easy to take architecture for granted and yet we have so much beauty around us. For example, shop fronts the world over are often well maintained at street level yet when you glance up to the skyline you can see that there is real depth of design on the upper part which, unfortunately, often is neglected. Taking pride in what we have will bring immense reward now and in the future.
“My career is based on understanding, interpreting and finding a way to translate the needs of other people into a final product using local materials wherever possible. We regularly have opportunities to embrace new challenges and complex design briefs; this makes the job so much more satisfying.
“I very much look forward to working with the team at G H Johnston Building Consultants Ltd and to ensuring that we, as a firm, can continue to maintain the high quality service we offer.”As you visit ‘G H Johnston Building Consultants Ltd’, you may find interest in following listings . . .
