Creativity, commitment and consistency are three of the qualities that Maxwell & Company architects and designers build on to ensure that it stands apart from the crowd.
Founded in Inverness in 1992 by managing director James Maxwell, the company now boasts 10 members of staff, allowing it to take on prestigious and long-term contracts in the commercial, domestic and leisure markets.
The company is currently working on a wide range of projects mostly for private clients including a high quality hotel commission in Sutherland, a sustainable, low energy tourist development in Strathglass, a large estate lodge conversion and extension south of Inverness, and an HQ for an oil industry company in Aberdeen.
For James architecture is about fulfilling opportunities, adding value and delivering results that enhance people’s lives and their surroundings. “It is essentially an intellectual pursuit with a practical result. It is both autocratic and democratic; it requires individual skills, collectively employed. The reward is the journey that you take with a client, a team of designers and the building contractor from the germ of an idea to the completion of a finished project. We work constantly to ensure a strong partnership with a keen focus. This is especially important since many of our projects are very complex and take several years to complete.”
“These long-term relationships are both professional and personal. It’s critical that all our clients are fully involved and feel able to communicate with us, and have trust in our understanding and commitment to their project.
Our service, particularly in residential work may involve us in minute details, decoration, furniture design or commissioning of special arte facts. That is a measure of the trust involved.”
In addition to this client centred approach James is committed to creating designs and constructions that are befitting of the environment: “We are extremely fortunate to do justice to such an environment is very challenging. Each commission is unique and demands dedication to provide an appropriate response.”
The quiet, calm, modest environment of Maxwell & Company is indicative of the team’s focus and dedication that enables it to bring to fruition work on projects as diverse as some of Scotland’s best known castles, a college for an educational charity or a steading conversion.
“Working with an architectural firm, even for a small household extension or refurbishment, ensures that the owner has added artistic and financial value.
We have been successful in recruiting and retaining excellent architects and technicians which I believe is vital for the levels of service we provide at Maxwell & Company. Many of the team have worked together since qualifying and that experience and knowledge of our business approach is invaluable and an indication of the level of commitment staff make. We are RJ BA chartered practice and that requires us to meet certain stringent standards in the management and output of the practice.”
Lynne Sproull joined Maxwell & Co 12 years ago. As one of their senior architects she is reassured by their steady and repeat business: “The current economic climate has, as we know, had a very negative impact on many companies. Thankfully, because of the nature of our business and specifically our long-term relationships with clients, we haven’t been affected in the same way. While this means that we are working on some very substantial builds we’re always keen for new challenges and projects so that we can help people to attain exactly what they desire. We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to work with new clients.
“Being an architect is very challenging and equally rewarding. It makes us question everything that is worked on so that we can be certain that the final product is fit for purpose and that we’ve fully grasped the brief and matched or exceeded client expectation. We relish the responsibility for taking our projects from feasibility to completion in the best way possible.”
James concluded: ‘Architects contribute to environment and society in unexpected and unseen ways. We carefully consider the impact of what we’re creating as well as the aesthetics. We are mindful of the fact that what we produce affects the quality and comfort of people’s lives. Architecture demands social responsibility. It’s an art, and one in which my team takes immense pride.”As you visit ‘Maxwell & Company (Architects and Designers Limited)’, you may find interest in following listings . . .
