The construction project landscape in the Highlands is full of success stories- Inverness” Centre for Health Science, Orkney’s European Marine Energy Centre, and Eigg’s “green island” powered by off-grid renewable energy, to name a few.

Ian MacGillivray, managing director of Inverness-based Synergie Scotland, is proud of the company’s role in the above success stories over the past 10 years and believes that they vindicate its commitment to working transparently, cooperatively, and collaboratively on construction projects.

Over the past 12 months Synergie has responded to the current economic climate and restructured to focus on its core skills. That is specifically to provide project management expertise and support to construction clients and contractors in the form of experienced people, proven processes and information technology.

Synergie’s former environmental and quantity surveying teams have been bought out by the existing staff. Infrastructure, particularly that required for renewable energy projects, is the target sector for the reorganised company. Recent project awards include two community wind farm projects in Lewis and two small scale hydro schemes in the Highlands. Working with client organisations to deliver Highlands and Islands projects effectively will remain one of the cornerstones of the growing business. New company growth is projected to come from a more specialist area where Synergie is attracting international attention.

Over the last 10 years Synergie’s subsidiary Synergie Training has become the largest trainer in New Engineering Contracts in Scotland as well as being the leading private technical IT training company in the north of Scotland.

It is the experience of NEC frameworks, seen in Scotland as breaking new ground, that has been attracting attention in Nigeria for the past two years. Said Ian: “We were first contacted by the Abuja Technology Village project team in 2010. Since then we have carried out a number of training and consultancy commissions for the client team in the early days of its $ I billion, 700 hectare development.”

Synergie is focussing on three key pillars of project success – people, processes and technology-and applying them to individual and framework NECs.

Most civil engineers in the area that use NEC will have attended one or more of Synergie’s training courses. The company now has a growing group of expert contract engineers who can be placed on a short or long term basis to help clients and contractors administer NECs effectively. As well as running public training courses Synergie is meeting the increasing demand for bespoke workshops often involving whole project teams working together in cooperation.

The NEC is very process driven – in terms of early warnings, programmes, the risk register and compensation events. Over the years Synergie has developed well proven processes that can be tailored to the size and nature of each contract. Main contractors, subcontractors and clients are keen to take advantage of this process experience on their own projects.

Building Information Model (BIM), project extranets and collaborative technology promise much to the industry but are very resource-heavy to implement, and often fail to deliver the benefit promised. Since 2005 Synergie has been working with BIW Technologies to develop a web-based tool for the management of NEC contracts as well as general project documentation.

The software has now been formally accredited by NEC and has been used by Synergie on a number of projects, including one in Nigeria.

By concentrating on providing project management services that bring together trained people, process experience and a range of NEC management tools Synergie Scotland is well down its transformation route.

Building on its foundation as a general engineering and project management consultant, Synergie is making the transformation into specialist solution provider. As you visit ‘Synergie Scotland Ltd’, you may find interest in following listings . . .
