The MSc Energy Management at Aberdeen’s Robert Gordon University is a vocational course designed by industry experts, providing essential skills for those wishing to progress in the energy industry.
Developed in partnership with a number of senior industry experts, this postgraduate course brings together oil and gas and renewable energy management. Now in its second year, the MSc stemmed from demand from the energy industry, and was designed with insight from industry experts, giving this course real value in the workplace. Specialist energy management modules provide the theory, policy and practice aspects of the energy industry.
Industry partners are very much involved, with guest lecturers and consultants from industry teaching and delivering seminars alongside full-time staff, many of whom have years of experience within energy industry management. Workshops such as careers, communication, writing project proposals and reports, and business model generation are an integral part of the course.
As a valuable alternative to the traditional dissertation option, students take part in a real-life consultancy project, working in groups to develop real solutions for companies in the energy industry. This offers students the chance to work on projects within the energy sector, with energy companies as clients. With a diverse range of projects on offer, students will learn essential business consultancy skills for the energy sector.
Assessment of the project is focused on specific skills related to writing effective proposals and consultancy reports, as well as ensuring client satisfaction, all of which have significant importance for students embarking on consultancy or management careers after completing the MSc Energy Management. The use of consultancy projects facilitates a deep understanding of the link between the principles and real world practice. It enables students to synthesise and critically apply in a practical context the knowledge, understanding and skills developed in the taught elements of the programme.
Team working is promoted among the students during the course of the project and they also learn to communicate in different settings. In particular, engagement with clients and associated industry contacts, site visits, workshops, and collaborative working are vital for students in developing a range of transferable business skills, including communication, networking, project management, as well as critical and analytical skills, all to enhance employ ability.

- Technical specialists with little or no management experience who need to improve management skills in an energy industry context.
- Technical specialists from other industries with transferable skills that can be applied to the energy industry, who are looking to change their career in the direction of energy.
- Those from the energy industry who don’t have the work experience required to study the MBA or the MBA Oil and Gas degree, but who want to study a focused energy management degree.
The study options are extremely flexible – students can study full-time or part-time by distance learning. This flexibility has been built into the course to ensure that people can study while working and wherever they’re based in the world.
