Cort Ma Law and Lecket Hill

  • Height: 1089 ft
  • Distance: 5 miles
  • Difficulty: Moderate to hard.
  • Total Time: Allow about 90 minutes.
  • Navigation: The paths leading to the summit are clear.
  • Starting Point: Car park on the B822 above Campsie Glen (NS613801).
  • Public Transport: Bus to Lennoxtown or Campsie Glen, then walk to starting point.

These are popular walks on well-defined paths. However, they should not be undertaken in the mist or rain, and should be avoided on public holidays when the car park and lower parts of the walk can become extremely noisy and busy.

Sturdy shoes or boots should be worn as the plateau can become boggy in wet weather, and care must be taken on the walk to Cort Ma Law to avoid the cliffs and scree on the Lennoxtown side of the Campsies.

Drive north of Glasgow towards Lennoxtown, then take the Crow road (B822) above Campsie Glen, stopping at the car park half-way up the hill (NS613801). From the car park, cross the road and head up the hill, climbing steeply up a series of well-defined paths to a summit and a cairn – follow any of the paths, as they all eventually lead to the summit.

Arriving here for the first time, it comes as a surprise that the summit of the Campsies is so wide and flat. From here there are a series of cairns along an undulating path on the plateau of the Campsies, ending with a short climb to the cairn at the highest point at Cort Ma Law. From the summit of the Campsies, you get good views to the mountains to the north, and south to Lennoxtown and Glasgow.

On the way back from this walk, it is worth stopping at Clachan of Campsie and walking to Campsie Glen, a popular beauty spot.

Lecket Hill

  • Height: 1000 ft
  • Distance: 4 miles
  • Difficulty: Moderate to hard
  • Total Time: Allow about 90 minutes
  • Navigation: The paths are indistinct, especially once you are on the summit of the Campsie Hills. Do not attempt this in the mist.
  • Starting Point: Car park on the B822 above Campsie Glen (NS613801).
  • Public Transport: Bus to Lennoxtown or Campsie Glen, then walk to starting point.

Park your car or use public transport as for the walk to Cort Ma Law, then walk up the road a bit until you come to a bridge and a stream on your right. Cross wherever possible, and head up the hill, following the steep and clear path. Because you are walking on grass, this can become muddy and slippy in wet weather. The path soon levels out and follows a fence to the summit of Lecket Hill.

This walk can be combined with the walk to Cort Ma Law to make a circular walk, though there doesn’t appear to be a clear path between the two summits, so some navigation over open ground may be necessary. If planning such a circular walk, take a detailed map and don’t attempt this in misty or wet weather.
