This is a straightforward climb up Scotland’s most northerly Munro. From the summit, on a clear day, you get stunning views of the Pentland Firth and Orkney. Just south of Ben Hope lies the Dun Dornaigil Broch.
Drive west from Durness, round Loch Eriboll, turn south at Hope Lodge and continue south on a minor road past Loch Hope until you reach some farm buildings and a parking area at Alltnacaillich (NC462477).
The path up Ben Hope starts here. Cross the road and climb steeply up through the heather and gorse bushes, following a stream, through a break in the cliffs until you reach a ridge. The path then levels out briefly before ascending a broad ridge marked by cairns leading to the summit.
Drive just south of Ben Hope to see the Dun Dornaigil Broch (NC456450), an excellent example of a Pictish broch, with its triangular lintel. The walls of the broch are 14-feet thick and it is 27-feet in diameter in the interior.
