Having your head in the clouds was once considered a bad idea though for fledgling accountancy firm Jet Stream it’s pivotal to their success, and a first for the Highlands.
Based between Inverness and Nairn at Delnies the firm is an accredited partner of Xero Online Accounting Software, a secure cloud based system offering reliable data storage, along with convenience and efficiency. Whilst the business is new the experience of the staff is vast. Chartered accountant Lynn Smith qualified in 2006, trained with Scott Moncrieff in Edinburgh, and after working for Ernst & Young decided to set up her own practice, which started trading in January 2014.
“We’re very passionate about helping people in small and medium sized businesses to maximise their profits, minimise their tax bill and keep the paperwork simple. We use a cloud based system which means that our clients can log in at any time, from any device and add or retrieve information the minute they need it. The days of having boxes of paperwork and invoices are long gone. The technology that we use (xero) is now so sophisticated clients can take a photograph or scan an invoice, upload it, and the software extracts and inputs the data. It’s incredible to be working with such a seamless system,” explained Lynn.
Jet Stream Accountancy has a portfolio of nearly 50 local clients already and due to this rapid success has had to employ an additional Chartered Accountant, who happens to be Lynn’s twin sister Tracy, and also Hilary, an experienced accounts assistant who completes bookkeeping and payroll on behalf of clients. They work primarily with businesses based in the Highlands and Moray.
“We know how frustrating it can be for people when they can’t ask a simple question that might put their mind at rest so we’ve created as much flexibility in how we work as possible. Clients can also access the Jet Stream team on Thursday evenings and Saturdays. We have targets within our practice, such as providing an email or telephone response within 24 hours, and year-end accounts within three months (of a year end). We see ourselves as accountable to our clients and publish our results on social media channels. We will always keep our workload at a capacity that enables us to deliver that first class service,” Lynn continued.
Whilst the business offers many of the services you might expect from a traditional accountancy firm the team has also put considerable thought into the needs of local businesses, including a virtual finance director (VFD). A VFD is essentially a business advisor, someone that becomes a trusted source for financial insight at a far smaller cost than a permanent full-time FD. Having access to an experienced, knowledgeable finance professional was a luxury that many businesses couldn’t afford on a permanent basis, but linking in with a virtual FD is now within reach for many smaller companies.
Jet Stream Accountancy is also an expert in many of the add on apps compatible with Xero including Vend, a cloud point of sale that can run off an iPad or other android device. They recently installed and set up Coast Candle Co on Vend when they opened their new shop in Dornoch. The benefits of using cloud point of sale include inventory tracking, customer loyalty and real time reporting. It also has the ability to link in with Xero, eliminating the need to manually record sales in the accounting system.
“We give our clients substantial value for money. Once a year all clients receive a profit improvement plan and we offer unlimited phone or email assistance. We don’t charge by the hour and instead operate a menu pricing system so clients pick the price they want to pay depending on the level of support required. These fees are fixed and paid by manageable monthly instalments to assist cash flow. No more surprise bills,” continued Lynn.
