Let a financial adviser make your money grow

Investors Planning Associates Ltd (IPA) is a UK-wide company with a head office in London, which was set up in 1970 to provide professional personalised financial advice.

The company has a network of self-employed financial advisers across the length and breadth of the country, who make a fundamental difference to the financial well-being of their clients.

Investors Planning Associates Ltd (IPA) now has two experienced financial advisers servicing clients in Scotland as well as further afield – and both are located in the Highlands.

Inverness-based Ian Bremner has been a member of the IPA since 1982 and last August Melissa Turnbull, who ran her own financial planning company in Beauly, decided to join the group.

Melissa said: “I’ve run Melissa Turnbull Financial Planning since I moved up to the Highlands in 2000 but I joined the IPA last year because the idea of being part of a bigger company, while remaining self-employed, really appealed to me.

“Running a business on your own can be very lonely and the financial industry changes so quickly and there are many regulations to keep up with so it is good to have the support of Ian and the rest of the group.

“The move also suited my clients, all of whom have stayed with me and have been perfectly happy for me to introduce them to the IPA philosophy.”

Melissa’s clients also remained loyal because of the professional service she provides and tailors to suit their individual financial needs – a practice also shared by IPA.

“A client’s priorities change through the course of their life,” Ian Bremner explained. “When they are younger they are more interested in mortgages and protection for their children and as they get older they become more interested in saving for the future and their pension.

“We are there every step of the journey which means we build a relationship with them and their families over the years and become a friend, as well as their financial adviser.”

Both Melissa and Ian provide a full range of financial planning services from savings, investments and pensions, to mortgages, protections and inheritance tax. Melissa also has a company that provides wills, power of attorney and advanced tax planning (Asset Advice Ltd).

“A major part of what we do is inheritance tax (IHT) planning which is affecting more and more people,” Ian said. “Twenty years ago it was only big estates that got hit, but nowadays many more clients have potential tax liabilities”

Melissa and Ian are also well versed in international tax laws as some of their clients are ex-pats living abroad. In addition, they have clients across the UK with the majority in the Highlands and Islands.

Despite their extensive client base, Melissa in particular is looking to take on new customers. “It’s never too late to seek financial advice, but it is best to start using financial planning when you are younger and people should also encourage their adult children to start a relationship with an adviser,” she said.

“I think a lot of people worry about how much it’s going to cost them but at the initial meeting, which is at our expense, we explain what the charge is going to be and the amount agreed is paid directly from the person’s investment. So they are not writing out cheques up front – unless of course they wish to pay for the service that way.

“During the first meeting we also carry out a detailed fact find and use FinaMetrica’s Risk Profiling system, which we consider to be the best in the business, to get an incredibly accurate assessment of the client’s attitude to risk. Their portfolio will then be managed on that basis and reviewed regularly.”

She added: “A good financial adviser should make you money the same way your accountant will save you money. I think most people left to their own devices will just put their money in the bank or cash ISA and that doesn’t return much. So really, if you want your money to grow, you have to speak to a financial adviser.”
