After looking at the memorial we went down to Loch Assynt for a look, what a beautiful loch, especially in the sunset. There is fishing in the loch run by Assynt Angling Association but permits are required, they can be purchased at the Hotel.
The Assynt area is one of outstanding natural beauty. The native fauna and flora are not just of British but European significance. Most of the brown trout fishing in Assynt north of Elphin is controlled by two organisations: the Assynt Crofter’s Trust and the Assynt Angling Group.
The Assynt Crofters’ Trust control about 200 lochs north of Lochinver including Loch Crocach, Loch Poll, Loch Drumbeg and Loch Cul Fraioch. Most of the fishing to the south (another 150 or so lochs) is controlled by the Assynt Angling Group; a partnership between the local angling club and landowners, offers day, weekly and season permits at reasonable rates to visiting anglers, offering information on brown trout angling breaks in the Highlands, giving access to excellent trout fishing on more than one hundred and fifty lochs. Numerous hill lochs (some with boats) in the Assynt area controlled by the Assynt Angling Group including Lochs Cam, Veyatie, Assynt, Awe, Ailsh and many others. Permits for the Assynt Angling Group lochs and for those controlled by the Assynt Crofters Association are available from Lochinver Tourist Office and local hotels.
The Assynt Angling Club and North Assynt Estate offer more than 30 small lochs full of brown trout; giant trout up to 12 lb have been recorded over the years. The Group recognises the fragile environment in which these fish populations exist and aims to manage the fishings in a sustainable manner for the long term benefit of anglers and the local economy. Try the Assynt Angling club for some of the best wild brown trout.
