The Highlands Recycling Experts – Developing for the Future

Construction is where it all started for my father back in 1977, building roads and highways for local authorities,” says Munro’s general manager. Rod Munro. “Over the years our business has successfully grown to meet the requirements of the developing Highland area.”

Indeed, the Munro’s family business now consists of seven separate divisions, operating from five company owned facilities located in Invergordon, Alness, Evanton and Inverness.

“We offer a range of services from asbestos removal, aggregate supplies, construction and demolition to commercial waste management, waste recycling and skip hire. That’s what makes us unique; most of our clients prefer to deal with one organisation than arranging several different trades to work together.”

Latest developments in the Munro’s business include the recent purchase of a JCB High Reach Demolition Excavator allowing the controlled demolition of structures up to 26m in height, the first in the Highlands, also the appointment of Munro’s as full corporate members of the National Federation of Demolition Contractors; the only member in the Highland area.

Rod comments: “We were delighted with gaining membership of the National Federation of Demolition Contractors. This is something we have been working towards for many years and was the result of detailed assessment of our industry knowledge, procedures and safety record. Membership is subject to continual assessment by the federation and gives our clients and potential clients the assurance that we operate in a professional and safe manner.”

Within Munro’s waste recycling division they have continued to invest heavily. Rod explained: “Diverting recyclable material away from landfill is a key part our waste business. We have recently opened our state-of-the-art £ 1.4 million recycling facility located at our Beechwood Road Waste Transfer Station on Evanton Industrial Estate. This is the only facility of its kind in the Highlands which allows the separation of co-mingled materials into their specific types ready for reuse. It is not only far better for the environment but saves on landfill charges, savings we are happy to pass onto our clients,”

In addition to regular commercial mixed waste and recycled material collections, Munro’s is happy to offer separate food waste collections. “Following numerous requests by our clients in the hospitality sector we can now offer a separate food collection service. Our clients were informing us that food waste is by nature heavy, smelly and expensive to dispose of at landfill, so we investigated, designed and constructed a far cheaper, environmentally friendly local solution. Food waste is collected, taken to our in-vessel composting facility where it is processed under controlled conditions into agricultural grade compost, giving a 100 per cent recovery rate.”

These are just some of the recent developments at Munro’s. Always looking at the future, the company is currently working on plans to advance its waste recycling facilities to achieve zero waste to landfill. Rod continues: “This must be the ultimate goal for our waste recycling division, with increasing environmental legislation on the horizon and ever increasing pressure on local businesses to reduce their environmental impact our zero waste to landfill facility will provide the Highlands’ total waste disposal solution.”

Naturally, Health and Safety is a key factor in the Munro’s organisation, having been awarded the CHAS contractors health and safety accreditation scheme, also achieving the requirement of British Standard OHSAS 18001: 2007 for health and safety management systems. Munro’s also holds ISO 9001 for quality management systems and ISO 14001 for environmental quality management systems.

All the company’s services are resourced in-house utilising its dedicated management, operatives, plant and equipment.
